Leadership, Management, and Operational Teams
“Not finance. Not strategy. Not technology.
It is teamwork that remains the ultimate competitive
advantage, both because it is so powerful and so rare.”
Patrick Lencioni
High performance teams emerge from an environment that nurtures and rewards five key values: diversity, respect, trust, accountability, and results. When these values are consistently reinforced in support of a clear and focused mission, extraordinary outcomes occur.
Fundamental Team Values
Diversity – demands that the team seek out members with differing perspectives, experiences, values, and behavioral styles. Homogenous teams are great at doing what they collectively know how to do, but they are less able to create and investigate alternative options. Having even a single differing perspective opens up new opportunities and energy.
Respect – among team members allows diversity to actually work. Team members need to not only tolerate but also embrace differences as a key contributor to the success and viability of the team. Respect also acknowledges all the egos on the team without allowing them to hinder or sabotage the team’s agenda and success.
Trust – makes it possible for people to share bad news and/or offer contrary perspectives and opinions without fear of jeopardizing their relationships and careers. Trust also demands that the group members be able to count on each other to meet their commitments.
Accountability – is at the heart of high performance. It turns great ideas into tangible results. When a target or deadline is missed, it is not overlooked. It is identified, discussed, and addressed.
Results – should be the focus of any “team-building” initiative. It doesn’t matter whether the mission of the team is determined within the group or externally. What’s critical is that the outcome is highly valuable to the organization. Success feeds on itself, and each milestone provides new energy to propel the team continuously forward.
